Fast Facts:

  • Demand on WA hospitals increases as Barnett Liberals prepare to cut hundreds of jobs
  • Key indicators show demand on hospital services is increasing
  • Kim Hames must come clean on how many jobs are on the chopping block

The Barnett Liberals are preparing to sack up to 2,000 hospital staff, despite key indicators showing that demand on hospital services is increasing.

It’s clear from these key indicators that demand on our hospitals is increasing and cutting hundreds, if not thousands, of jobs will put extreme pressure on our health system:

  • The total number of people who attended emergency departments increased by 5,357 or 3.6 per cent between the June 2014 quarter and the June 2015 quarter (WA Health Performance Report, April to June 2015 quarter);
  • The public hospital surgery waitlist for WA increased by 3.5 per cent, up from 16,677 in September 2014 to 17,270 as of September 2015 (September 2015 Hospital Wait List Report); and
  • New appointments at outpatients clinics increased by 1,323 or 9 per cent, up from 14,636 in June 2014 to 15,959 in June 2015 (June 2015 Outpatient Attendances Report).

The AMA said last week that up to 2,000 hospital workers will be sacked. Dr Hames said yesterday that it won’t be 2,000. He needs to come clean and explain to Western Australians how many jobs will be cut and outline how many front line positons, including doctors, nurses and specialists, will go.

Comments from Shadow Health Minister Roger Cook:

“Colin Barnett and Kim Hames must know how many jobs are being cut. They must be honest. Tell us today – how many doctors? How many specialists? How many nurses are going to go?

“This is a dysfunctional, chaotic government at its worst – the work load in our hospitals is going up, but Colin Barnett is cutting jobs.

“Just remember, it was a few months ago when Kim Hames said Fiona Stanley Hospital was under pressure because of so much demand.

“What an insult to the hard working doctors, nurses and staff in our hospitals to say ‘we don’t need them’.

“Colin Barnett has blown the books and he doesn’t care who gets hurt. He would rather spend millions on monuments to himself, rather than hospitals.

“You can’t sack hundreds of hospital workers and not expect it to have a negative impact on patients.”
