Government announces delay to new Children’s Hospital opening

March 12th, 2015 by: Kwinana Electorale Office

While not unexpected, the announcement today by Kim Hames that the government has once again fudged the opening date for the new Children’s Hospital until March or April 2016, is disappointing.

The Minister has form on this where he has previously second-guessed hospital opening dates leading to the disastrous commissioning of Fiona Stanley Hospital.

After the debacle of the delays at that hospital I can understand that the government has tried to get in early to lower community expectations that the hospital will remain without patients for up to six months after the hospital is complete.

The key issue at the new Children’s Hospital, however, is that the hospital will be too small for Perth’s growing population and struggle to meet demand because the Barnett Government refused to add an extra floor to the hospital.

By the Government’s own estimations, the hospital will have reached capacity after just five years.

Today’s additional amendment of the opening timeline for the new Children’s Hospital leaves little confidence that the Minister has any control over the project, just as he lacked controls on the Fiona Stanley Hospital project.
