Fast Facts:

  •  Leaked extracts of report reveals hospital delays inevitable
  •  December 2012 report highlights serious risks related to commissioning schedule
  •  Government must release the full report

The Barnett Government’s deceptive behaviour and hopeless management of the Fiona Stanley Hospital commissioning has been further demonstrated by leaked extracts of a secret Department of Health report.

The report titled Fiona Stanley Hospital Baseline Schedule Report and dated December 2012 highlights serious risks associated with the commissioning date of the hospital.

Despite the clear advice and warnings in this report that commissioning was behind schedule the Barnett Government continued to deceive the public of Western Australia at the State Election in March 2013 by claiming the hospital would open in April 2014.

Extracts of the report reveal:

  •  Workforce readiness was a key risk to the commissioning schedule;
  •  No active program for recruitment of clinical workforce was underway;
  •  Bed configuration planning was not yet finalised; and
  •  The clinical commissioning was running significantly behind schedule.

It is virtually impossible to believe the claims by Mr Barnett, Mr Buswell and Dr Hames that they were unaware of potential delays to the commissioning of the hospital.

Health Minister Kim Hames must explain why he failed to act on the report and why he continued to deceive Western Australians in the lead up to the March election by claiming that the hospital would open on time.

WA Labor Leader Mark McGowan said:

“This report reveals serious deception and dishonesty by the Barnett Government.

“Dr Hames must immediately release the full report and provide an explanation to the Parliament about his involvement in this mess.

“This is another example of dysfunction, incompetence and dishonesty in the Barnett Government.

“The Barnett Government has failed to deliver Fiona Stanley Hospital on time and on budget despite its promise to the people of Western Australia and worse still it kept the truth from the public when it knew the hospital’s commissioning was very likely to be delayed.

“This failure has cost WA taxpayers around $400 million.
