Liberal-National Government’s regional hospital upgrade con

The Liberal-National Government recently re-announced upgrades to regional hospitals – the funding for which was already promised in May 2011.

Health Minister Kim Hames and Regional Development Minister Terry Redman announced a new Manjimup Hospital, as well as upgrades to Northam Hospital, Collie Hospital, Merredin Hospital, Narrogin Hospital and Katanning Hospital.

These upgrades were already announced in May 2011, as part of the Southern Inland Health Initiative. However, the funding was ripped out of the budget in the Mid-Year Review, released in December 2013.

All the Liberal-National Government has done is reinstate funding that was cut in December. If the Government had stuck to its original timeframe, the upgrades would have been completed in 2014-15. Now they won’t be completed until at least 2017-18.

This is an extremely deceptive announcement by the Liberal-National Government; it is trying to con regional Western Australians.

Its claim that these hospitals are receiving a funding boost is laughable, given these upgrades were originally announced in 2011, then cut.

The budget cuts in December mean the people in these regions will have to wait two years extra to receive these important upgrades.

This is yet another example of how the Government’s disastrous financial management is causing delays to important hospital upgrades across regional WA.
