Liberals ignore their own cleaning contract in a rush to open children’s hospital

– Critical hygiene processes look set to be cut short for political reasons to achieve October opening

– Just two weeks ago the government could not say when the hospital would be open

The Liberals are rushing opening dates for the new Perth Children’s Hospital in a bid to boost the Premier’s waning political stocks.

Just two weeks ago in Budget Estimates the Health Minister was unable to provide a ‘practical completion’ date for the hospital, yet today the Premier claimed handover will occur in August.

Budget Estimates confirmed that a contract to prepare the hospital for clinical level hygiene would run for 26 weeks after handover.

Today’s announcement seems to ignore the government’s own 26 week period, slashing it to a mere eight weeks.

The 26 week clinical clean was necessary to ensure a safe environment free of infection.

Comments from Shadow Health Minister Roger Cook:

“Western Australians don’t want to see the Liberals make the same mistakes with the children’s hospital as they did with the botched commissioning of Fiona Stanley Hospital.

“Just like Fiona Stanley and Elizabeth Quay, it seems the Liberals are rushing the opening of the Perth Children’s Hospital for political and publicity purposes.

“They couldn’t provide any firms dates two weeks ago but today, miraculously, they have opening dates.

“Corners should not be cut, proper hygiene processes should not be rushed, just so Colin Barnett can score a timely photo opportunity.”
