Local residents demand Cockburn Cement clean-up

Member for Cockburn Fran Logan launched a campaign against Cockburn Cement Pty Ltd and the corrosive dust and odour infiltrating the houses of local residents living in suburbs nearby. Mr Logan joined Shadow Health Minister Roger Cook, Federal Labor Member for Fremantle Melissa Parke and Cockburn Mayor Logan Howlett and hundreds of local residents outside the gates of Cockburn Cement, Russell Rd, Munster.

“The number of complaints received by the Department of Environment and Conservation over the past 12 months has increased significantly with more than 50 complaints received so far this year alone,” Mr Logan said. “Local residents are being forced to put up with white dust coating their cars, roofs and windows, while more ominously, many are coming forward complaining of blood noses, headaches and breathing difficulties. “Today‟s rally will give residents a voice.”

Mr Logan called on the Barnett Government to take immediate action against Cockburn Cement. “Environment Minister Donna Faragher and her Department have been overwhelmed with complaints from local residents and all she has done is refer to new licence conditions,” he said. “This response is totally inadequate. People‟s lives and health are already suffering. “The Minister must look past the administrative licence work of the Department of Environment and act on the damage being done by Cockburn Cement. “While she sits on her hands, residents are forced to stop their children from playing in their own backyards, keep their windows closed and thoroughly clean their windows and cars every few days.” Mr Logan said the solution was a bag-house filter process to remove dust and odours from stack emissions. “This could put an end to the problems but it costs money, and Cockburn Cement is unwilling to invest in this technology.” Mr Cook said families had complained of health problems caused by the dust and odour. “Children suffering from nose bleeds, people waking up in the middle of the night unable to breathe, asthma and sinus problems are common complaints,” he said. “The Barnett Government must commit to undertake a local health audit of people living in neighbouring suburbs to ascertain the extent of the health problems. FRANCIS LOGAN MLA Shadow Minister for Water; Consumer Protection; Industrial Relations „If it is found these health problems are directly related to Cockburn Cement, the Barnett Government must act accordingly. “Health Minister Kim Hames cannot sit by and do nothing while people get sick from simply living in their homes.”
