Quadriplegic tragedy exposes the government’s appalling priorities

The tragic case of burns victim, Greg Evans, has exposed the appalling priorities of the Barnett Government.

A resident of the Quadriplegic Centre of WA, Mr Evans received horrific burns to 7% of his body while being bathed due to faulty equipment. As he is a quadriplegic, he was unaware of the damage being done by the water to his skin.

The centre’s most recent annual report stated that its accommodation assets had “now passed the end of its effective economic life and in some respects, safe use”. This was the fifth year in a row the organisation had made the complaint.

Following questions in Parliament from WA Labor MP Alanna Clohesy in February, the government admitted it had no plans to build a new facility and Minister Hames admitted he had failed to get funding for the centre.

However, he Barnett Government is proud to champion its glamour projects like Elizabeth Quay and the mulit-million-dollar features at the new football stadium.

Mr Evans and others could be forgiven for thinking they had been forgotten by the Barnett Government while they languish in aging and substandard health facilities.
