Fast Facts:
During the 2008 and 2013 state elections the Liberal Party promised a multimillion dollar redevelopment of Royal Perth Hospital.
$67million has been ripped out of the RPH redevelopment budget.
No funding has been allocated for the redevelopment over the next four years.

The Barnett Government’s mismanagement and broken promises have put enormous pressure on WA’s health and hospital system.

WA Labor Leader Mark McGowan said the Barnett Government’s broken promise to redevelop Royal Perth Hospital would mean patient care would be compromised.

“The chaotic handling around the future of RPH is symbolic of the Barnett Government’s dysfunctional approach to the health portfolio,” Mr McGowan said.

In 2008, the Liberal Party presented a petition containing over 35,000 signatures supporting a redevelopment of Royal Perth Hospital.

At the 2008 election the Liberal Party promised to ‘transform RPH into a 400-bed trauma facility with a new emergency department and a new west wing’. The Barnett Government reiterated the commitment during the 2013 election campaign.

Mr McGowan said Colin Barnett’s decision to shelve the estimated $180million redevelopment was a major blow for residents in Perth and surrounding suburbs.

“Once again Colin Barnett has failed to honour his election promises.”

Shadow Health Minister Roger Cook said the health portfolio was out of control under Colin Barnett and Kim Hames.

“The bungled handling of Fiona Stanley Hospital has meant it will open a year late and the $118million paid to Serco to run a hospital with no patients has been wasted, when it could have paid for extra floors on the new children’s hospital,” Mr Cook said.

“Western Australians are queuing up just to get into our hospitals, due to record ambulance ramping, 200 staff and 40 beds will be cut from hospitals and nearly $200million of promised hospital upgrades in regional WA have been delayed.

“Now the Barnett Government’s promise to redevelop RPH has effectively been scrapped.”
