WA Labor will today move a motion in Parliament to stop the Barnett Government from further increases to parking fees for Western Australian nurses and hospital staff, Shadow Health Minister Roger Cook said today.

Mr Cook said despite widespread criticism, the Barnett Government refused to reverse its decision to increase hospital parking fees by five times those in place when it came to power.

“The Barnett Government claimed the fee increase was needed to fund a new car park at the Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre,” he said.

“Enforcing a tax grab on nurses and hospital workers is not the way to pay for infrastructure.

“By the Barnett Government’s logic, Premier Colin Barnett should be forced to pay huge daily fees to cover construction costs for his personal parking garage at his new Palace at Hale House.”

Mr Cook nurses and hospital staff claimed the Barnett Government already increased hospital parking fees by around $35 a week and further increases would take fees to $2,000 a year for the average hospital worker.

“For many of these important workers, the increases to hospital parking fees have cancelled out the recent pay increases they fought so hard to achieve,” he said.

“The Barnett Government seems to think its fee increases will simply encourage nurses and hospital staff to use public transport. This is far from practical for most workers, especially for those who work night shifts and have to travel long distances.

“Despite a public campaign from nurses and a Parliamentary committee recommendation that the Barnett Government scrap the plan, Premier Colin Barnett and Health Minister Kim Hames have indicated it will remain.

“By law, a government is only entitled to recover the cost of running hospital car parks. The Joint Committee on Delegated Legislation’s report revealed the fee increases were excessive and went beyond cost recovery.

“Any additional fees have been collected illegally and I urge the Barnett Government to abandon the tax grab.”
