WA Labor today welcomed the opening of the new Fiona Stanley Hospital – a project conceived, planned, commenced, funded and named by the former WA Labor Government.

WA Labor Leader Mark McGowan and Shadow Health Minister Roger Cook paid tribute to former Premiers Geoff Gallop and Alan Carpenter and former Health Ministers Jim McGinty and Bob Kucera for their key roles in commencing the project.

This facility will provide future generations of Western Australians with world-class healthcare. However, serious concerns remain over the Barnett Government’s mismanagement of the project, which has caused delays, huge cost blowouts and wasted taxpayer’ money.

WA Labor’s concerns include:

  • The hospital was completed more than nine months ago yet has stood idle, wasting millions of taxpayers’ dollars.
  • The Barnett Government has paid Serco, the privatised operator of the hospital, $118million before the facility is even fully open.
  • Each day the hospital costs more than half a million dollars to run, even before it is fully operational next year.
  • The IT system has been botched – Not only is the hospital not paperless as promised but the IT costs have blown out by around $370 million.
  • The Barnett Government bungled the purchase of the IT license, making computer records at the hospital invisible to almost every other hospital in WA.

WA Labor Leader Mark McGowan said, “This project was conceived, planned, commenced, funded and named by WA Labor.

“Without the hard work of the former WA Labor Government, Western Australians simply would not be able to utilise the world class facility that will open today.

“This hospital is crucial to the future of our health system and will provide state-of-the-art healthcare, particularly to people living in the southern suburbs.”

Shadow Health Minister Roger Cook said, “Fiona Stanley Hospital will be a fantastic facility for WA. It’s a shame the Barnett Government was unable to deliver the project on time and on budget.

“Their failure to open the hospital on time has cost taxpayers millions of dollars to run a hospital with no patients and their failure to resolve IT problems has seen the cost blow out by a staggering $370 million.

“The Auditor General criticised the Barnett Government over its waste of taxpayers’ money in a damning report released in June.”
